# Smart-Linkr

Use Smart-Linkr to manage local and cloud links in Adobe documents.

Smart-Linkr is LinkrUI’s powerful Links dialog feature for managing placed files in Adobe documents.

Use it to review local and cloud links, relink files, upload assets, sync changes, and perform other link-management tasks.

### To open the Links dialog

1. Select the <kbd>Links</kbd> icon in the bottom toolbar.
2. The Links dialog opens and displays every link in the document.

{% hint style="info" %}
The Smart-Linkr feature is available in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, and After Effects.
{% endhint %}

### Links dialog overview

LinkrUI displays badges on the Link button when links need attention.

Hover over a badge to see the number of links missing locally or from the cloud.

<figure><img src="https://1895738376-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F2lt9lcavWcRN7izHUMZE%2Fuploads%2F90CLGgjgrKC3poxhRyX1%2FScreenshot%202026-08-06%20215459.png?alt=media&amp;token=0466fbbe-3bda-4a3b-b13b-920cb7a45922" alt="LinkrUI Link button showing red and pink status badges" width="317"><figcaption><p>Link-status badges shown on the Link button.</p></figcaption></figure>

* Pink badge: links missing from the cloud.
* Red badge: links missing from the local device.

The LinkrUI **Links dialog** lists every file placed in the document. This includes local files and cloud assets. Available actions depend on each file’s type, location, and status.

#### Check Links in Background toggle

Use **Check Links in Background** to control whether LinkrUI monitors links in open documents.

* When enabled, LinkrUI checks local and cloud links for changes.
* When disabled, LinkrUI does not check links until you enable it again.

When you re-enable this setting, LinkrUI checks the DAM for updated cloud assets. It then refreshes link status.

You can change how often LinkrUI checks for links in the background under <kbd>Main Menu</kbd> → <kbd>Preferences</kbd>.

Background link checks have little effect on performance in most documents, and you will likely not see any delays in most documents.

To improve performance in complex documents with many links, disable **Check Links in Background** unless you're actively working with links.

#### Download links

Use **Download Links** to control whether LinkrUI downloads cloud assets during link checks.

After downloading an asset, LinkrUI follows your link-update preference. It can update the link automatically, prompt you, or leave it unchanged.

{% hint style="info" %}
Disabling **Check Links in Background** also disables the **Download Links**\
option.

If you keep **Check Links in Background** on but turn off **Download Links**,\
LinkrUI will still find and show you any broken or missing links (with a badge over the\
Link button). However, it won't download the assets from the DAM to your computer.

These toggles are also available in the Preferences dialog.
{% endhint %}

#### Search and headers

Use the search bar above the links list to find specific links.

The links list includes **Status**, **Page**, and **Name** columns. Status shows the link state. Page shows where the link appears. Name shows the file name.

Select a column header to sort by that column. Select it again to reverse the sort order.

#### Link path

Hovering over a link in the Links dialog provides a tooltip of the full file path. By defaut, it's saved in the documents folder on your device.

#### Link actions

Select the three dots in the right side of the link to get a list of [available actions](/linkrui/smart-linkr/links-actions.md) for that link.

#### Link status icons in the LinkrUI Links dialog

The icon beside each link shows its current status. Link status can be local, cloud, downloading, missing locally, conflicted, modified, or embedded.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.santacruzsoftware.com/linkrui/smart-linkr.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
